A magical castle for a boarding school, a young lad being the hero who didn’t know that he was a wizard, magical creatures, interesting spells, and what a fascinating story we have before us. But what Harry Potter offers is much more than this. A narrative that glues you to the book, imagery that is so vivid and packed with emotional dilemmas of growing up, in short it is an experiment that works.

You might have read many fairy tales that strike resemblance with the very story of Harry. You say no, think again. Cinderella’s time with her stepmother is not much different from Harry's with his aunt and uncle — the Dursleys. His adventures too at times are like Alice in her wonderland. Broom ride much similar in the tales dealing with witches. But somehow, it is the suspense, the fast moving plot and clever use of language that sets Harry Potter books apart.

You would be amazed to know that the names given to the special characteristics of the characters have been taken from the Greek mythology. Such as the scar (that looks much like a bolt of lightening) on Harry's forehead is the symbol of Zeus, the god of the sky. And did you know that Hermione was the name of the “face that launched a thousand ships” Helen of Troy.

Magical creatures are a forte that Rowling has beaten everyone on. She has come up with a wide range of creatures in a single series — from dragons to hippogriff, sphinx to manticore and from centaurs to unicorns. Basilik, a large snake that appeared in the second book, was by all means well used by the author. Though she borrows some from the legendary stories, their interaction with the characters and understanding is far better than in the original ones. Nonetheless, don’t forget gnomes, pixies, ghosts, and house elves. These combined to create an intriguingly enchanted world that could ever exist.

But the concept of dementors, a creature that sucks the soul and all the pleasant memories from a person, is obviously quite horrible. These eyeless beings make one remember the most painful memories of all.
Apart from this the way Rowling has coined certain terms is quite mind boggling indeed. Look at the word Quidditch. Interestingly a fan noticed that the balls used in the game are quite related to the name of the sport itself. Take first two alphabets of quaffle (qu), there are two buldgers, so double ds from that and the last part of snitch (itch) and you will have quidditch. Not only that, look at the dexterity of the writer with which she comes up with names for houses, Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, or even looks at the names of the characters. Somehow, the name gives away a lot of information about the character. Take Albus Dumbledore for example. Albus is driven from Alba meaning white in Latin, and white stands for purity and good.

While, Dumbledore in old English stands for a bumblebee, the name suggests a fair person who stays busy as a bee, and that Dumbledore has been. Argus Flitch, the watchmen, is another example. Argus was a character in Greek mythology that had 100 eyes and used by Hera to keep an eye on one of the priestess Io. His last name Flitch means to steal something secretly. And if you remember he has been watching Hogwarts quite keenly with his cat Mrs Norris.

The story too has evolved amazingly. A 10-year-old boy who lives with his aunt’s family (Dursleys) doesn’t have a clue to his past. He is badly treated there. One day out of the blue comes a wizard named Rubeus Hagrid (whose mother was a giant) and tells him that his parents — the Potters — were wizards and now Harry is to be one too. He goes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and encounter two of his best friends Ron and Hermione. There he also meets Dumbledore, the headmaster who admires certain qualities in Harry. Professor Snape, who is quite strange from the beginning, nonetheless proves that he is not harmful by the end of all the books except for sixth one. In each book a certain feature about Harry’s parents or his own past is revealed. Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, both of whom he meets in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban and discovers them to be two of his father’s closest friends. He also finds out that Black was his godfather. But, at the end of the sixth book and with Dumbledore dead, Harry is left with only a few characters that truly are on his side. The list includes, Ron Hermione, Hagrid, Lupin and Professor Minerva McGonagall.

The Ministry of Magic, the concept of muggles, idea of good and evil, has never before captivated the readers in a manner so unique. Though the prevalent notion about the end is that the good will defeat the evil, the usual thing, to see that a teenaged boy can fight even the biggest villains with the help of his friends is pretty amusing. No matter how many children’s writers have contributed to literature, Harry Potter will remain a book that made all of us go back to the world of magic and fascination that was replaced by the likes of Ninja Turtles, Superman and Spiderman.
