Generally speaking, most of our lives are spent acquiring formal education and no doubt being a student is a tough job. There are times when we get irritated or bored out of the study routine no matter at what stage of the acquiring process we are. Here are some tips that have helped me through the years and if followed may guide a student (at primary, secondary, or even at university level) towards a smoother and relaxing yet rewarding study schedule.

· Adjust your biological clock in a way that you wake up at sunrise as studying during the early hours is better than two hours of late night study

· During study it’s normal for people to suffer from distractions that can be external or internal. To avoid the former you can take the following measures:

a) You need to have a spacious, clean room/place with sufficient arrangements for light and air. It’s suggested that you maintain a moderate temperature and atmosphere in the room where you study. Unbearable heat will exhaust your mind and body and working in a super cool environment especially at night tempts you to catch a few snoozes.

b) Posture has an immense effect on your study hours. Relaxing yet alert body position lengthens your study duration, keeps your mind focused as it doesn’t tire you.

c) As far as internal distractions are concerned, in order to avoid them one has to lead a contented life and this could be achieved by being fair and honest in personal and public matters; since being mean to others snatches a person’s peace of mind and heart. You need to work devotedly to achieve your goal in life. And the rest should be left to God. In short be optimistic about everything in life.

• Take breaks ranging 5-10 minutes every after half an hour or an hour as appropriate because this is the maximum time duration in which you can study with concentration and then the mind starts roving here and there.

• Do your work on time. Even if you don’t get homework make sure to revise the day’s lecture. If you get one hour lecture by the course instructor it is advised to devote two hours to that particular subject at home. It will save you from last minute cramming and solve the issue of having slipped important points from mind as this approach makes you revise the topic often.

• Walking while memorising is fun and it keeps your weight in check.

• Eat light but do it often when you are studying.

Following are some activities that are not recommended to a student:

• Do not stay up the whole night when a test is due the next morning.

· In hectic schedule especially in papers without gaps it is normal for a student to come under a mental stress but remember not to waste your time in thinking or planning for an accounts paper when you have mathematics the next day.

· Similarly if by hard luck you could not perform well in your very first paper, avoid wasting energy and time grieving over it. Instead analyse your mistakes so you don’t repeat them and work with positive attitude for the next paper.

· Do not take energy drinks or strongly caffeinated beverages as they might charge you up for the night but later on you might have to pay for it by over sleeping or feeling clumsy and tired at a time when you cannot afford it.

· Do not study immediately after lunch. Give half an hour break.

· Last but not the least, group study is recommended only when mandatory otherwise for memorising, revising or writing essays working individually is better.
