Many people want to serve their countries. Many are serving in a direct way by joining the government or in the armed forces. But how does a common man serve his country. Can he? Obviously yes, there are many ways to serve your country. And one of them is smoking!

Not Kidding. Imagine if the government places a ban on smoking. Who and How many people will suffer? Lets take a look of the consequences in the following paragraphs.

First of all, the agriculture industry will loose its share. As per the annual report on agriculture, the net income from tobacco cultivation is many times more than that of other crops.

The Export Industry will also suffer. The country’s income from tobacco exports is approx Rs 1,605-crore.

The Industries manufacturing cigars, cigarettes, beedis, and other tobacco products will be closed. These are the highest revenue generating industries and contribute a lot to the GDP of the country.

The workers in these industries are in millions.

You definitely don’t want these people to loose their jobs and take up begging. These are people who get daily income based on their production and their bread depends on the paltry sum that they get from the contractors who employ them. These contractors too will suffer, as they will have to change their line.

The hawkers; in a small town of around 10,00,000 people, there are at a minimum, 10,000 hawkers who depend on the sale of tobacco products for their livelihood. Imagine millions of them across India going jobless.

The Healthcare Industry, not to be forgotten, will also suffer. There are several diseases related to tobacco consumption and the hospitals make a lot of money out of that: treatment and medicines.

The mortality rate will also go down as people will live longer without tobacco, causing further increase in population. Sigh!

The bottom-line is that, if you are smoking or using any of the tobacco products, you need not feel guilty about not serving your nation. In fact, you are serving it in a much better way than others are.
