How Is Mobile Marketing Trending?

In just the last few years, there has been an incredible advancement in not only mobile technologies, but the ways in which mobile is being utilised in day to day life. Mobile marketing has certainly flourished with these advancements and with the success of Smartphone’s worldwide, we are beginning to see trends in mobile and mobile marketing, so what are they?

When mobile marketing first began to truly take off, trends showed a high usage of application use on mobile including mobile voucher use and location based applications. Mobile marketing then was flying high, in many ways, on the hype of the latest applications and services it had to offer. That hype however, is sure to die down over time and so mobile marketers are looking to head back to the drawing board on many of their applications and run a fine comb over them to sift out any teething problems. iPhone’s for example face a problem with their GPS applications. The application drains the battery at an alarming rate and so it becomes impractical for users to run it in the background. Instead, users have to activate the application and locate themselves on the device before it begins to be of any real use.

Apple’s mobile marketing team are looking to make the application far more convenient by first eliminating the existing battery drain problem, which will then allow for users to activate the application and keep it running in the background as they go about their day to day business. iPhone are looking to offer a list of interests for users to select which will trigger automated alerts and SMS advertisements when the user comes within proximity of an event or store that relates to that interest.

Proximity marketing isn’t the only trend being seen in mobile marketing development however. It is also possible to see that marketing strategies are being developed. “Mobile Triple Play” is just one example of this focus, but powerfully sums up the fresh new thinking behind what mobile marketing can offer. MTP takes the values of Location, Relevancy and Immediacy and combines them with the aim of engaging customers for longer. Figures suggest that over the next year or so, both browsing time and pages viewed will increase per user, and so marketers are having to fight to keep customers on their page, or to engage them enough to bring them back. This highlights a key trend in that mobile marketers are looking to make mobile marketing more specific, efficient and successful.

Mobile marketing then, in many ways, is showing a strong trend towards age old marketing principles. It’s looking to make its products and applications more enjoyable and convenient to use for customers, and also is looking to target customers and take the initiative in engaging them more efficiently. The biggest trend however, is showing that mobile marketing is here to stay and to fight for supremacy.
